Putting the A into DFMA

Temporary works is an often forgotten part of the design process in mass timber buildings. Working together with an install crew to design lifting and propping methods that are safe and quick to install is a important to a successful project delivery.

This project involved the installation of a series of 5T glulam trusses as well as raking props to stabilise the building until connections could be made to the core. Working with an experienced installer like Standstruct on this project is also a great opportunity to learn more about the details which worked well, and those which could be improved for future projects. It's fair to say the glulam bearing connections were a hit! Crane 'hook time' is such an important metric during the installation process, so details which allow for tolerance and quick removal of the lifting apparatus to pick up the next element is a clear focus to enable the graceful dance that is a mass timber install! Glulam was supplied by Australian Sustainable Hardwoods who did a tremendous job in optimising connections for manufacture and installation. CLT was provided by NexTimber who would be delighted that their product was being used in such an iconic project in their home state.
