Mass timber - A family affair!
Director Nick Hewson took some well-earned time off over the Christmas break to take his family and parents to Tasmania. While there he stopped in on a couple of his favourite projects!
Iron Creek Bay in Sorrell, Tasmania is a career highlight. Designed and construction while Nick was working at XLam this is a shining example of the benefits in taking a DFMA-led approach to the design and the innovative folder roof plate structure is one which utilises the unique characteristics of CLT to deliver a striking and materially-efficient structure. It even got rid of the external columns from the initial design, allowing an unimpeded view of the stunning landscape. The cherries are also to die for if you happen to be there when they are in season!
Less glamorous, but perhaps more worthy is the new toilet facilities at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary! Arboralis provided full engineering design for the structure at below cost to recognise the valuable work being done by the centre. It was a scorching hot day but the kids loved getting up and close with the local wildlife!
